BEWARE OF SPOILERS!

Itoshi Rin is a surly boy who’s usually calm, but that’s only if you don’t speak to him. He’s not interested in others and has one goal: defeating his big brother (nii-chan!) Sae. That’s the reason why he’s still playing football, and he’s doing his best to pursue his aim. He works out a lot and eats a lot. Anyway, when he was a child, he was a cute kid. His brother was the only thing that mattered to him, he was his everything, his whole world. Once Sae saw Rin scoring a goal casually, he asked him to start playing football with him. From that moment on Sae’s aim was already to become the world’s best striker, and he told Rin to be the second after him. Rin was happy because he was fine with that, he wanted to become like his brother. So they started to play together until Sae had to go overseas for his career. While Sae was away, Rin decided to become the best Japanese player so that he’d be scouted as his brother, and they’d be able to play together. When Sae was about to take off, he smiled at Rin saying he’ll become the best in the world.
Rin did his best and as a matter of fact, he became the number one. When Sae was back after four years, he was completely different and had a different light (?) in his eyes (nope, maybe it’s better to say that the light went away from there). He said he wanted to become the best midfielder and was no longer interested in becoming the best striker. Sae added that Rin was now the one to become the best striker. But Rin disagreed with him because his nii-chan had changed their dream alone, without telling him. Sae explained his reasons, but Rin didn’t want to accept it and told him he wasn’t the same brother he had shared a dream with. It’s crystal clear that Sae’s eyes were suffering. Anyway, he told Rin that he still didn’t understand that the football field was a battlefield and bet that If he had won against him, Sae would have taken back what he had said. Rin didn’t make it and had the worst time of his life: his brother started to tell him horrible things and left leaving him shocked. The thing is that Rin wanted to stop playing football because if he couldn’t pursue his dream of becoming the second-best striker in the world after his brother, it didn’t make any sense. Rin stopped playing football for some time. A bit later, (after freeing his rage), he thought that his brother was right and that one day he’d crush him.
That is how Rin started to hate what Sae did. We still don’t know exactly what Sae thinks about him and why he told those horrible things to his brother, but we know that they still love each other. After the match against the Japanese U-20, Rin thought that Sae acknowledged him and his face changed to something more similar to his old self. Unfortunately, his nii-chan was there to tell him that thing, but it was related to Isagi. This is why Rin considers Isagi his rival and they still are like this. Rin tries to take advantage of him to achieve his goal. Ah, I forgot to mention that Rin was even jealous of Shidou, sob.
During the Neo Egoist League, Rin leads the charts and continues to do his best to crash his brother. Only in the latest chapters, after a continuous evolution on his battlefield, Rin discovers his ego, which is playing football with his life on the line. There is another flashback that illustrates better the kind of kid he was, and he’s always lived to fight and… die.
