Chapters from 93 to 97 are related to Ume’s past. The story takes place when he was 9.

We see little Ume talking with his mum and dad about his mother’s pregnancy. He says he doesn’t know if it’s a boy or a girl but since in all kinds of books and movies he sees that big brothers take care of their siblings, he wants to do the same. The following scene is a truck that hit both his mother and father, while he’s lying on the floor with some blood dripping from the left, under his eyebrow (this is where his scar comes from). Without any other relatives, after being passed around different facilities, Ume ends up in an orphanage where he has no will to live. After a month, he still doesn’t want to eat properly, because he says he can’t taste food. And, above all, he doesn’t want others to approach him because he’s a “murderer”. He lost his beautiful smile when he was with his family and now his hair has started changing colour from black to white. That’s when the city begins to be messed up and ruined by Furin’s boys. We find out that the man running the facility, Shitara Yuki, was a Furin student, and he says that they were a little more “well-behaved” before. When he’s talking to the other caregiver, little Ume runs away from the facility. When he’s walking on the street, a thug makes fun of him and asks where his mum is. Ume enrages and punches the punk, the latter kicks him but realises that even if it’s a kid who’s against him, he’s strong. Little Umemiya stands up and smiles even if he’s drooling which irritates the thug who decides to beat him up.

It doesn’t matter how many times he’s beaten, he continues to smile and watch the boy who’s always more annoyed. Suddenly, Ume’s saved by someone wearing the Furin uniform who easily wins against all the thugs in that place.

Even if he was rescued, Umemiya tells him it’s his fault if he didn’t manage to die and the boy understands that it was Ume who did everything on purpose because he wanted them to kill him. Little Ume replies that it’s his fault if his parents and sibling died, so that’s the way he has to pay for it. He says that because he remembers that he was watching some figures in a shop window and didn’t want to leave even if his parents told him so. It was at that moment that the truck arrived at full speed and they died to save him. The third-year Furin student looks at him with nonchalance and tells him that if it’s the case, then he can go ahead and die which leaves him shaken. He adds that if he wants to die, he has to do it by himself, without dirtying someone else’s hands.

Ume thinks he’s right and crosses the cornice of the place he’s upon. Before him, there’s the void because of the height, and it’s because of this that he thinks that if he jumps from there, it’s all over. Although he agrees with what the boy told him a moment ago, he realises he’s shaking because he’s scared to jump. Nevertheless, he thinks that’s something he needs to do because he wants to go to Hell to be punished and end up in a place meant only for him, where he’d be without his parents and his sister or brother.

When he decides it’s fine like this, he looks up at the sky and then closes his eyes, thinking he’s sorry. At that moment, he sees something in his mind. He suddenly remembers that when his parents pushed him away from where he stood, they were smiling because they had succeeded in what they wanted to do.

While realising this vision, Ume already has a foot in the void and falls shouting “Nooo”! That’s when the guy who saved him from the thugs grabs him by the arm and pulls him away, throwing down his body. He instantly tries to lift himself, but he’s shaking because a moment before he saw death with his own eyes. While throwing up, his saviour tells him that since his reply was “No”, from that moment on he has no choice but to become stronger, so that he won’t give in when life is tough. Completely shocked, the little boy faints. When he comes back to his senses, Shitara is piggybacking him and after scolding him, he tells him, while smiling, that the most important thing is that he’s fine. Umemiya tells him that he remembered his parents were smiling and he can’t understand why. The man replies that’s because they were happy they could save him. The voice of the kid then starts to tremble, asking if they didn’t hate him for being selfish, since it was his fault if they died. Shitara replies again that it’s impossible because they were smiling, besides, thanks to his job, he was able to see all kinds of parents and compliments to his ones because, with that smile, they could show how much they loved him. Umemiya sobs and asks the man if he can miss them.

(My heart... Y_Y)

The man smiles and replies that he surely can, which leads Ume to think about how happy he was with his parents. He bursts into tears, calling them with all his might which makes Shitara happy since he finally can pour out his sadness.

Through a flashback, we see that Ume’s father once told him that there was only one rule in their house: trying to eat dinner with the whole family. And it was because that way food tastes much better. When Ume and Shitara are back at the facility, the children and the other caretaker greet them, all worried for him. Ume is speechless at first but then says he’s sorry, which makes everyone happy. Shitara says they’ll eat Ume’s favourite food for dinner and the children ask him which one it is. With sad eyes, he replies that he likes omurice the most. After taking a bath, they’re ready for dinner. Ume realises everyone is having fun because they’re eating and chatting together. When he touches the fork, his parents come to his mind and he can’t eat because he feels alone, but a girl sitting next to him says she felt the same way when she arrived there. She felt lonely because she couldn’t see her mum anymore, so the food had lost its taste, nevertheless, spending time with the other people in the facility gave back the flavour since everyone there became her family. Shitara told her that although they weren’t blood-related, they were a family. So she adds that she and everyone else want to be a family with him. There’s a throwback that illustrates how the previous flashback continues. Umemiya still can’t understand what his parents words mean. Why does the food taste better? He says that the food always tastes good. His mother tells him that if he can enjoy that flavour, it means that his heart is full because it's like a bucket.

His father adds that when someone’s heart is not full, they can’t taste how delicious food is. It is because when you’re sad, the energy inside the bucket goes down and to recharge it, you have to spend your time with the people you love.

(HE'S SO CUTE DAJGDALGDJADAG)

When you’re with the people you care about, your bucket is filled and the food tastes good. That’s when you can build up the strength to overcome difficulties. And it’s not related to his family alone, but to other people he’ll meet in time to come. While he remembers about that moment, Ume starts to feel warmer. The little girl starts panicking because she doesn’t want to force him, but he replies that’s fine and thanks her. So he starts eating, leaving everyone speechless. He tastes his omurice and thinks if ketchup has always been that sweet. Then, he smiles and says that’s delicious.

(MY CUTIE PATOOTIE ç___ç)

Realising that Umemiya likes omurice this much, some children offer theirs to him. He declines, but suddenly he’s called “onii-chan” and freezes. Shocked, he looks at the little boy who called him like that and this one explains that it was because he’s older than them, so he’s their onii-chan. Little Ume remembers his mother’s pregnancy and the fork he gripped with all his might a moment ago falls on the floor. He asked himself if he could have the chance to become a big brother again, and this surely meant that. He starts crying, but this time he’s determined and says he won’t fail again because he’s their onii-chan. Ume thinks to himself that he’ll protect them all.

The scene changes to five years later, where we see a different kind of determination in Ume’s eyes.

Now he's more similar to the Ume we know from the story's beginning. The children from the facility greet him before going to school and he makes sure everything is in order. A little girl tells him that he seems happier than usual and he replies proudly that his important day has come (even if she goes away and is not interested at all in what he’s saying).

Even if the girl doesn’t care, Shitara tells Ume that his idea hasn’t changed. The latter smiles and replies that meeting him and the guy who saved him that day was fate, so going to Furin has to be the same. Thanks to Shitara’s flashback, we get to know that Ume’s saviour was someone who lived at the facility too. Before going away that guy tells Shitara to do his job and take care of the kids, especially to focus on Ume as he did for him in the past. Ume is off and helps all the people from the city while walking on the streets. It’s crystal clear that he already cares for the others and they do the same with him.

While talking brightly with the townsfolk, Ume hears something crashing and goes after it, leaving his school bag behind. There are two thugs there and he brings them away stealing their scarves. Once they’re far from there, the two ugly mugs think he belongs to a gang, but Ume replies he’s just a common junior high student who loves his town and asks them to stop fighting in that place. Just the look in his eyes makes them shudder with fear.

The two thugs try to attack him and he says that that’s the only way they can talk. So he decides to hit both of them who are K.O. after a single hit. Ume was surrounded by all their gang that tried to attack him after being impressed by his abnormal strength. It’s at that moment that Hiragi makes his appearance. He says they were supposed to meet at 16:30 and asks Ume if he knows what time it is. Ume says he doesn’t know, which enrages Hiragi who says it’s 16:47 and that he hates those habitually late.

We see that Hiragi, through his anger, doesn’t even realise that he beat all the members of the gang that was there while Umemiya is smiling. He compliments Hiragi for being both cool and strong which causes Hiragi’s stomachache (there it is, the source of his problem started many years ago~). But that’s what Ume needs: he asks Hiragi to go to Furin together.

Hiragi is not interested and says that’s the last time he listens to him, and if he doesn’t convince him, Ume will give up. He remembers that Ume appeared out of the blue, and even went to his school to talk to him. Even if Hiragi told Ume directly that he hated him, Ume insisted on following him everywhere saying that he’d become the top of Furin and protect the town. Hiragi points out that he doesn’t like people who are all show and no go, that’s why if Ume is just telling lies, he’ll send him flying. Ume smiles and says that his honesty is what he loves the most about him. Then, he explains that the city is out of control because there are enemies from both the outside and the inside, as it was during the Bakumatsu Revolution. With this similarity, he wants to say that he’d like to create connections between people to face the same direction together. That’s the reason why he wants to become the top of Furin.

He plans to unite the school so that, after this, they can protect the town together and fight the outsiders. Hiragi says that won’t happen because even if he gives orders from the top, it’s hard to think anyone would protect those who hate them. It’s there that Ume explains that:

“If people don’t know something, then they won’t care for it.”

Basically, the solution is that those people have to learn about them. Once they do it, they’ll care if they break something of theirs. He wants to build a bridge that will overcome the rift created by the townsfolk and the Furin students. Ume continues by saying he’s developing connections with the people of the town and his friends who’ll join Furin with him. They want to extend this relationship with the guys in Furin so that they’ll become that bridge after learning about each other. That’s when Hiragi understands that Ume and his friends want to connect Furin with the town. The latter adds that a friend suggested patrolling the city so nobody would mess things up. He says it won’t be easy at the beginning, but one day he’ll make sure that the town is a place where everyone can be happy together. Hiragi asks why he’s needed for Ume’s plan and Ume explains that he’s strong, is a man of his word and has a lot of people following him, plus, he’s amazing. Anyway, the major reason is that Hiragi said that he hates him.

Hiragi is shocked but Ume explains that what he’s about to do will drag tons of people into it, even if it’s something selfish he wants to do. So, if he ever makes stupid decisions, Hiragi will be by his side and beat him back onto the right path. This makes Hiragi laugh while saying that Ume is completely mad. The latter smiles and adds he’d be happy if Hiragi would end up liking him. Hiragi says that’s why he hates him (lol!). The last scene is with Ume and the four *future* kings entering Furin for the first time.

We find out that Ume took away Haruka to tell him his story telling him “Let’s talk over a quick meal”. Haruka doesn’t know how to react to what Ume told him, and the latter tells him he didn’t want his sympathy, but he wanted to do it because he has been dragged into the battles of their past and targeted by Endo. Ume felt to show Haruka how he feels the same as him because being part of the town has changed him too.

After talking to Ume, Haruka can’t concentrate during his training with Hiragi. He feels they’re closer and realises how other people’s bodies can be warm. So he asks himself if he has changed and yes, he has. The thing he knows for sure is that the reason why he’s now like that and that place is like it is… is because of him.

And after a week, the fight against the shadows begins.
