CHESS NO KOMA

The “Koma” kanji is only one, and “Chess no Koma” should be written as follows: “ ???? ? ” , but Anzai in the manga writes it with the following kanji “ ? ? ” , giving them the free reading “ koma ”, written in katakana. Actually, their reading is “heitai ”, that means ”soldier/soldiers”. The first kanji has several meanings, as “soldier , troops, army, strategy..”, that I thinks it assumes according to the context, while the second one means “regiment, company, squad” (the same “ tai ” of “ taichou ” and of “division”in “Bleach”).

CHIMERA

In the anime (it has not be confirmed by the manga yet), precisely in the title of the episode 72, “Kimera” is the reading written in katakana of the following kanji “ ? ? ” (the first is the kanji of “ flower ”, and the second one of “ bride ” or “ daughter-in-law ”). Actually, the reading would be “ hanayome ”, that means “ newly married bride ”.

DANNA

Danna is written in katakana too, “ ??? ”, but in Japanese it would be written with the following kanji, “ ? ? ” . The first kanji means “ nightbreak, dawn, morning ”, the second one means “ what? ” (but for “ nani ” or “ nan -“ usually a different kanji is used, this one ? ). Intuitively, these two kanji have been choosen not for their meanings, but for the reading, since the meaning of the compound is “ husband “ or “ master ” and, if used as appellation, means ” boss, leader ” or “ sir ”.

KOYUKI

The kanji that compose this name are “ ? ? ”.
The first one means “ little ”, the second “ snow”, and the meaning of the compound is “ light snowfall ”, even if, using a little bit of imagination and, above all, considering that the name of her counterpart in MÄR Heaven is Snow, “ Koyuki ” could be interpreted as “ little Snow ”. “ Yuki ” would have been enough, but it is a name a bit more prevalently boyish, and maybe Anzai wanted to give to Koyuki a sweeter, “kawaii” connotation, since she's a feminine and sweet girl.

MAGMA SNAKE

When Lauren summons and pronounce its name, nearby the katakana ? ??·???? (but Anzai omits the separating point between the two words), there is the following piece of sentence: “ ? ?? ? ”. The first kanji means “ melt, dissolve, thaw ”, the second “ boulder, rock, cliff ”; the reading of the compound is “ yougan ” and means “ lava ”. The “ no ” is the genitive case, finally the last kanji is the one of “ snake ”, and its reading is “ hebi ”. So, “ yougan no hebi ” is “ lava snake ”, i.e. “ Magma Snake ”.

MONBAN PIERROT

Written with the kanji “ ? ? ”, i.e. literally “gate watcher Pierrot”(but I would say “ keeper ”, as the official illustrations says exactly “Monban The Keeper”, and also because this words implies which exactly is Pierrot's task) Actually in the katakana “ ??? ”, there is not the double “r”, but according to the official illustrations, and also to the fact that the Italian mask Pierrot has the French pronunciation, the transliteration “Pierrot” is the correct one.

TORAMIZU GINTA

The name is written with the katakana, ??? , that, being a phonetic alphabet, doesn't give information about the meaning, while the surname is written with the following kanj, ? ? . The first means “ tiger ”, and the second one means “ water ”. A compound composed by this two kanji doesn't exist .

NANASHI

It is clear that is name, even if is written in katakana “ ??? ”, has been chosen for the meaning, glaringly obvious to any Japanese reader (and not only), that till the recovery of Nanashi's memory and the discovery of how this name has been given to him by Galian, has wondered why the author had chosen it. In kanji, Nanashi is written this way “ ??? ”: the first kanji means “name”, the second by itself means ” nothingness”, but “ ?? ”, i.e. “ nashi ” means “without”, so the compound literally means “without name”, or even “unknown person”.

ZODIAC

I found it written in katakana placed as furigana above the inscription in numbers and kanji ““13 ? ? ”. The first kanji means “star”, while the second compose the verb “ to seat ”, or means “ gathering ”; the overall meaning of the compound is “ constellation ”. So, “Sanjuu saiza” means “ the thirteenth constellations ”, precisely the ones that compose the Zodiac.
