Name: (沖田総悟 Okita Sōgo)
Seiyū: Kenichi Suzumura
Okita is the best swordsman in the Shinsengumi. Personality-wise, he tends to be light-hearted and somewhat childish, not entirely unlike Kagura, though his speech is heavily deadpan. During a conversation between Kondo and Hijikata, Kondo asked Hijikata to stop Okita before he became Sadist, to which Hijikata responded: "No, its too late. He's the King from the Planet of Sadists".
Okita outwardly displays annoyance and dislike for Hijikata, and continuously tries to kill (or at least badly wound) him whenever he has the chance so that he can become the Vice-Commander. He trained under Kondo in the same dojo as Hijikata, and was actually a member of the dojo before Hijikata. In a episode flashback, Hijikata is seen addressing him as sempai. His dislike for Hijikata may have stemmed from a deep-seated jealousy over his sister and Kondo's affection for Hijikata. Losing his parents at a young age, he was raised by his sister, Mitsuba. Consequently, although he is sadistic and violent towards other people, Okita absolutely adores his sister and does everything he can to please her. Mitsuba is one of the reasons why Okita hates Hijikata. Okita viewed Hijikata as a rival for his sister's attention. He also greatly dislikes the fact that Hijikata treated Mitsuba coldly, although Mitsuba clearly showed signs of liking Hijikata.
Okita is very fond of Kondo, who took him under his wings when he was little. Kondo was the first person to befriend Okita when everyone else shunned him. Albeit he does not hesitate to cause physical harm to Hijikata, he does not let anyone harm Kondo and would always take retribution on those who hurt him. Kondo is another reason why Okita hates Hijikata. He resents Hijikata for stealing away Kondo's attention. Nonetheless, it is revealed that Okita still regards Hijikata as one of his three friends (the other two being Kondo and Gintoki).
Okita seems to get along rather well with Gintoki. After a rough beginning, the two find common grounds in their love of torturing and humiliating Hijikata. After witnessing the fight between Gintoki and Hijikata, Okita said he would love to clash swords with Gintoki one day. Although a hit from Hijikata would often result in a violent retribution from Okita, he doesn't seem to have a problem with taking a lecture or a knock on the head from Gintoki. When his sister came to visit, Okita bribed Gintoki (with a chocolate parfait) to pretend to be his best friend. Later when Okita left, Gintoki acknowledges the friendship to Mitsuba. He regards Kagura as a rival after an unfinished rock-paper-scissors duel during a sakura-blossom party, and whenever the two cross paths, sparks fly. Kagura is under the impression that he likes her, uttering at one point, 'oh, he definitely likes me', but as this hasn't been alluded to since, it is unknown if it should be considered canon. He has stated that he'll "be the only one to defeat her", and usually calls her by the nickname "China." He enjoys seeing women fight, finding the ugly looks on their faces as they grab each other hilarious. He wears a distinctive eye mask when taking a nap during duty, which is a frequent occurrence. At one point, he refers to himself as the best sniper in the Shinsengumi. Although he is a master of kenjutsu, he uses a bazooka more often.
In the original Japanese manga he likes to end his sentences in '~desaa' and "~desuzee'.
In Sorachi's original character design, Okita was a female, and wielded an umbrella.
In the character popularity poll, he got 2nd place, only 3 votes higher than Hijikata who got 3rd place.
In volume 12, Okita's age is revealed to be 18. Despite being under Japan's legal drinking age, in Edo, you can drink alcohol from 15.
Okita's birthday is July 8. He is 170 cm, and he weighs 58 kg.
His name is based on the historical Okita Sōji.
