Naruto Uzumaki ( ???? ??? , Uzumaki Naruto) is the primary protagonist of the Naruto series. He was the first character created by Kishimoto during his initial conception of the series, and was designed with many traits from other shonen characters, including Son Goku of the Dragon Ball series. In the series, Naruto is a ninja affiliated with the village of Konohagakure, and has ambitions of becoming Hokage , or the leader of the village. Due to being the host for the nine-tailed demon fox , a malevolent creature that attacked Konohagakure, he is ostracized by the other villagers. He compensates for this with his cheerful and boisterous personality, and over the course of the series, manages to befriend several other Konohagakure ninja, as well as ninja from other villages. He obtains an especially close relationship with Sasuke Uchiha , one of his fellow ninja in Team 7, and treats him as his brother. In the original Japanese anime,

Kushina Uzumaki ( ???? ??? , Uzumaki Kushina) is a ninja of the former Land of the Whirlpool. She had a son, Naruto Uzumaki , with the Hokage of the time, Minato Namikaze . She is noted to have had a brash, tomboyish demeanor, long red hair, and as time passed, blossomed into a very beautiful woman. Despite Naruto's close resemblance to his father, much of his personality and choice of ninjutsu are said to be similar to that of his mother's. She is presumed to be dead, as she is described in past tense.

Minato Namikaze ( ?? ??? , Namikaze Minato) was the Fourth Hokage ( ????? , Yondaime Hokage) . He had a son, Naruto Uzumaki , with Kushina Uzumaki , whom they decided to name after the main character in one of Jiraiya 's, his old teacher's, books. Soon after Naruto's birth, Minato sealed the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox into his son's body. Doing so cost him his life. Before he died, he asked that the villagers of Konoha not to see Naruto for the monster within him but as a hero who saved the village, a request that was ignored by most. It is unclear as to whether Naruto is aware of his relationship with Minato, although the two share a number of traits that are often pointed out throughout the series.

Prior to becoming Hokage, Minato was the sensei of Kakashi Hatake , Obito Uchiha , and Rin . Minato's talent as a ninja was a rarity in Konoha, such that he is referred to as the greatest shinobi the village has ever produced. His reputation is such that during the Third Ninja World War, flee-on-sight orders were given to enemy ninja by their superiors. He had such great speed that he earned the nickname "Konoha's Yellow Flash". This is a result of his Flying Thunder God Technique ( ????? , Hiraishin no Jutsu), which allowed him to teleport anywhere without notice by the use of a special seal. He also created the Rasengan , an incomplete technique he had intended to infuse with his own chakra nature. He was unable to do so prior to his death, but Naruto is able to accomplish this feat in later years.

Masashi Kishimoto originally planned to give Minato a different design with eyes similar to the ones of Gaara , a thinner neck and an aggressive face. During the Shonen Jump popularity polls, Minato appeared in the second one ranking at 12th and the most recent one ranking at 9th.
